Why White Onyx Demands the Utmost Care

The Most Spectacular
Natural Stone You Can Install

White onyx is formed by the slow precipitation of calcium carbonate in cave environments — a process entirely different from the geological formation of marble or granite, producing a stone of extraordinary translucency. Its banded white, cream, and honey tones with dramatic veining are visually spectacular under any lighting, but when backlit — with LED panels behind a feature wall slab or beneath a bar countertop — the stone appears to glow from within, creating an effect that stops conversation in any room.

White onyx is also, unequivocally, the most delicate natural stone we restore. It is softer than most marbles, more porous, and highly reactive to acid — etching immediately on contact with anything below a neutral pH. More importantly, its translucency means that any surface damage — an etch mark, a scratch, a dull zone — is visible not only from above but through the stone when backlit, making the damage dramatically more apparent than on any opaque stone.

At Lifestyle Marble Restoration, we approach every white onyx project with the lightest possible technique: the finest appropriate diamond grits, minimal machine pressure, careful temperature management to avoid thermal shock to the translucent structure, and penetrating sealers that protect without any tinting effect on the stone’s natural luminosity. We’ve restored white onyx feature walls, bar countertops, and accent surfaces in Palm Beach County’s most prestigious estate interiors.

What We Do

Every Statuario Surface.
Handled With Precision.

From a single etched countertop to a full-estate floor — we restore Statuario to the standard its value demands.

High-Gloss Polish Restoration

Statuario is almost always installed at a mirror-gloss finish that showcases its intense white field. We restore that gloss using calibrated diamond progression — no dullness, no haziness, no over-polish.

Etch Mark Removal

Statuario’s high-polish surface makes acid etching especially visible. We remove the damaged surface layer with fine diamond abrasives and re-polish to an exact match — invisible against the surrounding stone.

Bold Vein Preservation

Statuario’s dramatic veining is its defining feature. Our technicians work carefully around vein patterns during grinding and polishing to ensure the character of the stone is fully preserved, never blurred or disrupted.

Countertop & Waterfall Island Restoration

Statuario waterfall kitchen islands are among the most striking — and most etched — surfaces we restore. We eliminate etch rings, surface scratches, and dulling and return the surface to its original showroom depth.

Shower & Feature Wall Revival

Statuario is frequently used as a full-wall feature in luxury master bathrooms. We restore both wall slabs and floor tiles in a single visit using wet-environment diamond work and shower-rated penetrating sealers.

Penetrating Sealer Application

Every Statuario restoration ends with a professional penetrating sealer that protects the stone’s pores from future acid damage and moisture without adding any surface sheen or altering the stone’s appearance.

Our Process

Four Steps to
White Onyx That Glows Again

1

Deep Clean & Assess

We strip surface contaminants and assess etch depth, finish level, and porosity. A test patch is done on larger jobs.

2

Diamond Honing

Progressive diamond abrasives remove the etched layer and level the surface to a uniform, scratch-free plane.

3

Polish to Match

We finish at your floor’s original grit level — mirror-gloss, satin, or honed matte — so the restoration is invisible.

4

Seal & Protect

Premium penetrating sealer is applied and buffed in. Your Calacatta is walkable within hours, protected for years.

White Onyx FAQs

Common Questions About
White Onyx Restoration

Yes — in the vast majority of cases. Etch marks on white onyx are surface-level damage to the polished layer. We remove them with the finest appropriate diamond abrasives and re-polish to restore the surface clarity that allows backlit luminosity. We do a test patch on every white onyx project before proceeding.
It is among the most demanding. White onyx is softer than most marbles, more acid-reactive, and its translucency means surface damage is visible through backlit stone — making every imperfection more apparent than on any opaque material. Restoration requires the finest diamond grits, minimal machine pressure, careful heat management, and a clear non-tinting sealer.
The backlit effect depends on surface clarity — the stone needs to be polished to a level that allows light to pass through uniformly. When etch marks, micro-scratches, or contamination create surface irregularities, they scatter the transmitted light and reduce or eliminate the glow effect. Restoring the surface polish — carefully, with appropriate technique for onyx’s delicacy — returns the full backlit luminosity.
White onyx restoration takes longer than comparable marble projects due to the care required. A countertop project is typically 3-6 hours. A feature wall section is assessed individually. We provide a specific timeline during your free on-site estimate.
pH-neutral stone cleaners only — white onyx is extremely acid-sensitive. Never use any acid-containing product near onyx. Our Neutral Fresh Marble Cleaner is completely safe for white onyx. Included complimentary with every service over $1,000.
