A Stone Chosen for Its Quiet Character
French limestone is quarried in several regions of France and is known for a soft, creamy palette and an understated, timeworn look. Designers choose it for floors, stair treads, fireplaces, and bath surfaces where they want warmth and patina rather than shine. It is nearly always installed honed, sometimes with an aged or antiqued edge.
That character is the point, and it governs restoration. A French limestone floor that is polished to a gloss stops looking like French limestone. The aim is to remove damage and soil while keeping the finish that was designed.
Soft Stone, Real Maintenance
Like marble, limestone is calcium carbonate. It is typically softer than granite, it etches from acids, and it can scratch and wear along walking paths. Because the surface is matte and slightly porous, it also holds stains. Oils from cooking, cosmetics in baths, and rust from planters are the most common culprits.
In South Florida, humidity and moisture add another layer: damp stone can darken and show water marks. Good sealing and ventilation help, and so does cleaning only with products made for natural stone.
What We Do
A typical French limestone restoration includes:
- Cleaning and poulticing to lift oil, rust, and other stains from the stone.
- Honing with fine diamond abrasives to remove etching and scratches at the original finish level.
- Repairing chips and cracks with matched filler.
- Sealing with a penetrating sealer that does not darken or add shine.
Matching the Finish
Matching the finish is more art than science. We test in a small area, compare it in different light, and agree on the target with you or your designer before touching a full room. Where possible we blend repaired areas outward so there is no visible edge.
