What Makes Statuario Different From Carrara

Statuario comes from the same marble-producing region of Italy as Carrara, but it is rarer and more dramatic. The background is whiter and cleaner, and the veining is bolder and more graphic, running from soft gray to near charcoal. That contrast is exactly why designers specify it, and exactly why damage shows. A single etch ring on a white island is far more visible than the same mark on a busier stone.

Why Statuario Etches

Marble is made of calcium carbonate, which reacts with acids. Lemon juice, wine, vinegar, tomato, many bathroom cleaners, and even some soaps leave a dull, slightly rough patch where the polished surface has been dissolved. It is a chemical change to the surface, not a stain, which is why wiping does not help.

Sealing does not prevent etching. A good penetrating sealer slows liquids from soaking in and staining, but acid still attacks the surface. We tell clients this plainly, because many are told otherwise at installation.

How We Restore It

The process starts with testing. We confirm that the stone is marble, check how deep the etching goes, and hone a small hidden area to confirm the finish we are aiming for. For light etching, a polishing powder or fine diamond pads may be enough. For deeper damage, we step through progressively finer diamond abrasives, then polish to the original sheen.

Because the veining is the design, we avoid over-grinding any one area. Taking too much off can leave a faint dish in the surface that catches light and shows. When repairs are needed for chips or cracks, we fill with a color-matched resin and polish it level.

Care After Restoration

A few habits keep Statuario looking its best:

• Wipe acids (citrus, wine, vinegar) up right away and rinse with water.
• Clean only with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid bleach, ammonia, and bathroom or kitchen sprays not labeled for marble.
• Use trays and coasters on islands and vanities.
• Plan a light re-polish every few years in high-use kitchens; it is far cheaper than waiting for deep etching.
