Why Carrara Marble Needs Specialist Care

The World’s Most
Recognized Marble

Carrara marble — named for the city of Carrara in Tuscany, Italy — is the stone of Michelangelo’s David and countless Palm Beach County estate floors, master bathrooms, and kitchen islands. Its characteristic soft white or blue-grey background with feathery, linear grey veining has made it the defining luxury material in South Florida residential design for decades.

But Carrara’s widespread popularity comes with a widely shared problem: it scratches more easily than harder stones like granite, shows foot traffic wear faster than denser marbles, and etches on contact with acids found in everyday life — citrus, wine, coffee, vinegar-based cleaners. Many Carrara floors we’re called to restore have been damaged by well-meaning homeowners using the wrong products.

At Lifestyle Marble Restoration, we’ve worked with Carrara in every setting across Palm Beach County — from the entry foyers of Palm Beach Island estates to the master bath vanities of Wellington and Boca Raton homes. We know Carrara’s specific hardness range, typical finish levels, and how to match its distinctive soft veining pattern across repaired areas so the restoration is invisible.

What We Do

Every Carrara Surface.
Every Type of Damage.

From a single scratched countertop to a whole-estate floor restoration — we handle it all on Carrara marble.

Scratch & Traffic Wear Removal

Carrara shows foot traffic scratches faster than harder marbles. Our progressive diamond honing removes surface scratches and restores an even, uniform finish across the entire floor — no patchy repairs.

Etch Mark Removal

Acid etching leaves dull, whitish patches on Carrara’s polished surface. We grind away the damaged layer and re-polish to an exact finish match — seamless, invisible, and lasting.

Honing & Polish Matching

Carrara is finished at many different sheen levels — from a full mirror gloss to a matte Venetian hone. We identify your floor’s original grit level and restore to it exactly, so no area looks different from another.

Countertop & Vanity Restoration

Kitchen and bathroom Carrara countertops take daily punishment. We restore etch rings, scratches, and dulling from everyday use — returning surfaces to the clean, bright finish they had when installed.

Shower & Wet Area Revival

Carrara showers accumulate soap scum and hard water mineral film rapidly. Our wet-environment diamond honing and shower-rated resealing restores both walls and floors in a single visit.

Penetrating Sealer Application

Every Carrara restoration ends with a professional penetrating sealer that protects the stone’s pores without altering its soft, natural look. We never apply topical coatings or wax to Carrara.

Our Process

Four Steps to
Carrara That Looks New

1

Deep Clean & Assess

We strip surface contaminants and assess etch depth, finish level, and porosity. A test patch is done on larger jobs.

2

Diamond Honing

Progressive diamond abrasives remove the etched layer and level the surface to a uniform, scratch-free plane.

3

Polish to Match

We finish at your floor’s original grit level — mirror-gloss, satin, or honed matte — so the restoration is invisible.

4

Seal & Protect

Premium penetrating sealer is applied and buffed in. Your Calacatta is walkable within hours, protected for years.

Carrara FAQs

Common Questions About
Carrara Marble Restoration

Carrara rates between 3 and 4 on the Mohs hardness scale — significantly softer than granite (6–7) and even slightly softer than some other marbles. This is one of the trade-offs of its beautiful, fine-grained composition. Daily foot traffic with grit tracked in from outside is the primary culprit. The good news: professional diamond honing removes those scratches completely and restores a uniform surface. We can also advise on entrance mats and maintenance routines to slow re-scratching after restoration.
Usually both. A widespread dull grey haze on Carrara is most often a combination of micro-scratches from foot traffic, sealer breakdown that’s left the pores exposed, and mineral film from Palm Beach County’s hard water. It’s not permanent. Our deep clean followed by diamond honing and professional resealing restores the stone’s brightness and warmth in a single day. We’ll identify the exact causes during your free estimate visit.
Yes — finish matching is one of the most important parts of our process. Before we start any work, we assess your floor’s existing sheen level and identify the approximate diamond grit at which it was originally finished. We stop our honing process at the same grit so the restored areas are indistinguishable from the untouched stone. We do a small test patch first on larger jobs so you can verify the match before we proceed.
A typical Carrara floor (400–800 sq ft) is completed in one full day. Countertop-only work is usually 2–4 hours. Combined floor, countertop, and shower projects may run into a second day. You’ll receive a specific timeline during your free on-site estimate.
Only pH-neutral stone cleaners. Carrara is highly reactive to acids — citrus, vinegar, bleach, and most “all-purpose” sprays will etch it immediately. Our Neutral Fresh Marble Cleaner is formulated specifically for Carrara and all natural marble: it cleans, enhances shine, and leaves no residue or streaks. We include a complimentary bottle with every service over $1,000 and provide written care instructions after every project.
