Hard Stone, Demanding Surface

Granite is an igneous stone made mostly of quartz and feldspar. It is much harder than marble or limestone, and it generally does not etch from kitchen acids. That is why it became the default countertop for decades. But hardness does not make absolute black maintenance-free. On a black polished surface, any film, mineral deposit, or scratch reads as a visible blemish.

Owners usually come to us because the counter or floor has gone cloudy: a gray haze from hard water and soap, rings from wet glasses, or scratches along traffic paths that catch light.

What Causes the Haze

Most haze is not damage to the stone. It is residue: hard-water minerals, soap and cleaner film, or sealer that was applied too heavily and built up on the surface. Deep cleaning with the right alkaline stone cleaners can remove it. When the haze is actually dulled polish, from abrasive cleaners or years of wear, the surface needs re-polishing.

Scratches matter more on black granite than on lighter stones. Light scratches can be polished out. Deeper ones need grinding through progressive diamond abrasives, which has to be done evenly so it does not leave a visible dish.

How We Restore It

The process is straightforward but exacting:

• Deep clean and test: remove residue, then see what is left.
• Hone and polish: step through diamond abrasives to restore true black depth.
• Repair chips: fill with resin matched to the stone, then polish level.
• Seal lightly: a penetrating sealer that protects without leaving a film.

Finishes: Polished, Honed, or Leathered

Absolute black is available in polished, honed, and leathered finishes. Polished looks deepest and shows marks fastest. Honed looks softer and gray-black. Leathered has a subtle texture that hides fingerprints and water marks and is popular for outdoor kitchens.
